Hannie Schaft - Woman in resistence

The national Hannie Schaft Foundation was established in the spirit of Hannie Schaft. Its purpose is to raise awareness and call for resistance against those who undermine freedom and pursue exclusion. Hannie was an exceptional woman, courageous and determined to stand up against injustice. Her ideas are a source of inspiration to many.

The foundation

Immediately after the war, Hannie Schaft was commemorated annually by Truus and Freddie Oversteegen and others from the resistance council, but official commemorations were long prevented due to the communist background of the resistance council.

In 1982, the statue “Woman in Resistance”, designed by Truus Menger-Oversteegen, was unveiled in Haarlem.

To keep Hannie’s legacy alive as a symbol of (women’s) resistance, Truus and Freddie founded the National Hannie Schaft Commemoration Foundation in 1996, which has since organized the commemoration annually on the last Sunday in November.
